Hi, I have 60 watt mark III short head and have been experimenting with with two tube sets. Mesa 5881-6L6 STR 425's and Mesa 6L6 GC 440's. I'll make a brief description of the two just for further reference. The 440's seemed to have a smooth midrange, big bottom (not flabby or loose) and again, a fairly smooth top end.
I cannot imagine how more gain than a Mark III has could actually be useful. On Mark IIIs: Agreed that the R2 volume is absolutely necessary to use all three channels. There's also a reverb mod (changing one resistor) which makes the "dry" sound wetter and the "wet" sound really wet.
